CHARLEVOIX — The Charlevoix Circle of Arts recently hired David Reimer, as the music director for the Dorothy Gerber Strings Program.

Reimer began work at the Charlevoix Circle of Arts effective Aug. 22.

“I am excited to join the Charlevoix Circle of Arts as they accept the gift and privilege of the Dorothy Gerber String Program,” said Reimer. “I am grateful for the legacy of Dorothy Gerber and the patronage of her daughter, Gay along with Peter Cummings, who made string music education available to the children and youth of northern Michigan. The program has been a vital part of this community for years and I look forward to the challenge of helping it grow in the years to come.”

Reimer comes to the Charlevoix Circle of Arts from Calvin College in Grand Rapids, where he was the professor of violin and director of string studies since 2004. During that period, he was the creator and director of the Calvin String Summit, an advanced chamber music camp that featured faculty from ensembles like the Chicago Symphony, Detroit Symphony, Philadelphia Orchestra and the Emerson Quartet.

Prior teaching positions for Reimer included the Omaha Conservatory, the Cleveland Institute of Music Preparatory Department, the University of Connecticut School of the Arts, and the College of DuPage. He is also a member of the collegiate committee of the American String Teachers Association (ASTA) and performed as soloist with the Calvin Orchestra in several cities of England and China.

In the past two years at Calvin College, five violin students under his tutelage have won the school’s concerto competition and performed as soloists with the orchestra. Reimer played with Michigan orchestras such as the Kalamazoo Symphony, West Michigan Symphony, Grand Rapids Symphony, Traverse Symphony and Baroque on Beaver Island. Among his list of publications, he recently published articles on violin playing, including in the current edition of the American String Teacher.

“We are obviously very pleased to bring Dr. Reimer with his vast experience and talent to the Dorothy Gerber Strings Program. In the short time that we have worked together, I have felt confident that David will be an extremely capable, collegial and significant force to enrich the program.” said Gail DeMeyere, executive director at the Charlevoix Circle of Arts. “While the strings program is currently in a restructuring phase we look forward to hearing from parents and students that want to participate and become involved. There will most definitely be opportunities for students to continue their string education through the Dorothy Gerber Strings Program this fall.”

Parents and students interested in becoming involved with the strings program may send a letter of inquiry to Circle of Arts is located at 109 Clinton St., Charlevoix. Contact by phone at (231) 547-3554, or online at
